Decks, fences and interlock. Hamilton and Dundas.
1
Stakes and string lines mark exactly where the deck, the patio and the fence will go, measured off the house and the property line. You see the shape in your yard before anyone digs.
2
Every deck post stands on a concrete footing dug below the frost line, so a hard winter cannot heave the deck. Fence posts go in deep too, which is why a fence stays straight.
3
A ledger is fastened to the house, a beam goes across the posts, and the joists go in one at a time, evenly spaced and level. You never see this part again, so it gets the most care.
4
Deck boards go down with a small gap between each one so water drains and the wood can move. Then a railing around the open sides and stairs down to the patio.
5
The patio is dug out and built back up in layers: compacted gravel, a levelled bed of sand, then the pavers, cut tight at the edges. The base is why a patio stays flat for years.
6
Rails between the posts, boards along the rails, and the site cleaned up before we leave. Then it is yours.
